The Alentejo (“beyond the Tagus”) is the district inland from Lisbon, on the south bank of the Tejo (Tagus) river. A vast region of gently rolling hills, it is one of Portugal’s most productive agricultural and viticultural regions, producing regional wines under the VR Alentejano label and DO wines under the Alentejo DO designation. The region is also known for its vast production of natural cork.
There are a very large number of both native Portuguese varieties grown here, as well as French and Spanish varieties imported over the past few centuries, including Alicante, Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignane, Tempranillo (known locally as Aragonez) and Syrah.
The regional style tends to the modern, with bright fruit, good acidity and wide use of temperature controlled, double-jacketed stainless steel fermentation vessels.

Another great wine from highly-regarded winemaker Carlos Lucas of Quinta do Ribera Santo fame, Flor de Julia is produced from vineyards planted to Touriga Nacional, Alfrocheiro and Syrah, which has become a major variety in the Alantejo.
The wine is juicy and fruit-forward without being bombastic… silky and balanced with lovely length and a long, elegant finish of fresh berry and plum
